ACT I
In a Scottish farmhouse, it is the wedding day of James and Effie. James naps by the fireplace when The Sylph, a mystical woodland spirit, awakens him with a kiss. James is enchanted. Effie’s bridesmaids present her wedding accessories, and James gives her his family tartan. Madge, the old witch, warms her hands by the fire. Effie asks Madge to tell their fortunes. Madge says that Effie will be happy, but not with James, who loves another. When James chases out Madge, she puts a hex on him. The wedding day festivities commence. When The Sylph appears to James, he chases after her, jilting Effie.
